Considerations regarding laser hair restoration

One of the newer hair restoration surgical methods being used today is laser hair restoration.  This restoration procedure increases blood flow to the scalp and aids in the re-growth of lost or thinning hair.  The procedure has also shown to thicken the hair in many cases and has become a very popular procedure as a result of this.  However, people still ask the question “does this surgical procedure really work?”

How the procedure works

The laser hair restoration procedure involves of a donated strip of scalp tissue containing hairs that are deemed as being DHT-resistant typically removed from the back of one’s head.  DHT is a hormone that is known to cause baldness in both men and women.  Additionally, the hair grafts can be transplanted anywhere on a person’s skin and there is little risk of them falling out.  The laser creates small holes in the balding scalp area and the grafts are transplanted into them.

Post-operative care and recovery

Your hair restoration specialist is going to advise you of certain “do’s and don’ts” to pay attention to once you the surgery has been completed.  You don’t want to wash your hair for up to 48 hours and make sure that you do not scratch the scalp.  Additionally, try to avoid bumping your head as this may interrupt the new growth process.  About two weeks after the surgery, you will probably notice that some of the new hairs are falling out.  This is normal and is attributed to shock.

Your physician will most likely tell you that at the two week point, you should be able to start caring for your hair and that the restoration process is probably completed.  Within about 2 to 3 months, you should notice significant re-growth going on and you should not be able to tell the difference between the new growth and your existing hair.  Following your physician’s precautions will result in a successful outcome.

Possible side effects of hair restoration surgery

As with any surgical procedure, there is always the possibility of side effects occurring.  The same holds true with hair restoration surgery.  The more common side effects or symptoms include itchiness, pain, and swelling in the transplanted areas.  Although it is rare, infections occasionally occur and you will need to notify your physician if this happens so he can prescribe something to kill the infection.  Also, scabbing is normal.  Make sure you leave the scabs alone and let them fall off naturally.
