Hair Restoration for the Fairer Sex

Although hair restoration surgery is most commonly used by men, there’s a noteworthy population of women considering hair restoration procedures. Hair loss in women can occur for multiple reasons. They might be carrying the genes for pattern baldness, or they might have a hormonal imbalance. Some women are interested in hair restoration after plastic surgery operations. Regardless what the cause, it can be argued that hair loss can be even more upsetting and embarrassing for women than it is men. In the past, even the acknowledgement of female hair loss was taboo; today, there are many hair restoration options available exclusively for women.
However, it must be said thatĀ hair restoration procedures for women are more difficult than for men. Most women experiencing hair loss, even carriers of the pattern baldness gene, experience an overall thinning of hair on the scalp rather than specific areas of baldness. Compare this to male pattern baldness, where hair may grow thickly and luxuriantly on some parts of the head, and not at all on others. This thinning is caused by decreased follicle size, meaning that it’s difficult to get transplanted hair to stay in its new position without falling out. Likewise, the area where the hair was extracted from might not grow back. Therefore, hair restoration surgery is usually only successful for women who are experiencing hair loss in isolated areas.
As mentioned earlier, a notable percentage of women receivingĀ hair transplants have previously undergone plastic surgery. These patients are ideal for hair restoration, because they are interested in only restoring hair into areas that were modified during the surgery. Extensive plastic surgery can sometimes dramatically alter how the hair grows and shapes the face. These women usually have normal hair growth on areas of the head not altered by the surgery, and are merely trying to reverse any damage to their hairline the cosmetic surgery may have done.
But still, this is not to say that there aren’t women who are suffering from hair loss who are unable to get treatment. If you are a woman interested in hair restoration surgery, see if your physician can recommend you to a specialist. As with any other cosmetic surgery, there are plenty of illegitimate charlatans out there trying to make money off of you, so be sure that you are meeting with a legitimate hair restoration specialist who can tell you if you a good candidate for hair replacement.
