The average individual typically loses between 50 to100 hairs every day. When follicles get smaller and weaker, hair begins to occur and a restoration procedure may become inevitable. The sooner you react to the loss or thinning this and discuss a hair restoration surgical procedure with your physician, it is the best way. If they decide that you are at a point in time where it has become necessary, they may tell you to interview with a few hair restoration surgeons or recommend a few themselves.
Once you have had hair restoration surgery performed, the re-growth cycle of your hair typically progresses through 3 distinct stages as follows:
1st stage – once the surgery has been performed, you can expect some scabbing over the follicles and the hair to appear somewhat stubbly. The scabs typically disappear and fall off within 1 to 2 weeks. The stubble will typically disappear within 3 to 4 weeks. At this point the follicles enter what is referred to as a “dormant” stage.
2nd stage – new hair re-growth starts to occur within a few months of the hair restoration procedure being performed. Chances are, it will be fine (not thick), but it will eventually thicken up over time. This may appear to be a slow process initially, but just be aware of the fact that the new re-growth is occurring at the same rate as your natural hair. It is at this point in time that you will probably have a discussion with the surgeon who performed the surgery to determine whether or not another procedure is necessary.
3rd stage – the re-growth of new hair is typically cyclical in nature. There is a possibility that some areas of the transplanted follicles (grafts) will appear to be growing thinner or thicker than others, but there is no cause for alarm as this is completely normal. Just be patient because it will take up to a year for the process to complete itself and for the hair to even out over the scalp. Once this occurs you can consider that the hair restoration process is complete as the new hair will continue to even out and grow thicker.
On a closing note, there have been a number of scientific advancements in recent decades that have improved and enhanced hair restoration surgery. Today, it is viewed as a simple out-patient procedure that usually produces excellent results.
