Why is hair restoration surgery successful for some individuals and not others?

There are several hair restoration surgeries being practiced today which target the specific needs of the individual that is experiencing hair loss and a thinning hairline.  Sometimes these restoration surgeries exhibit extremely high success rates.  For instance, Follicular Unit Transplantation or FUT as it is referred to typically results in a re-growth yield of 95% to 99% in many patients.  However, hair restoration surgeries that result in about a 50% yield are considered to be unsuccessful.

So why is it that hair restoration surgery works for some and not for others? There could be a number of reasons for this but by far the most common is that the procedure is done when there is not a sufficient quantity of healthy donor hair.  The experienced surgeon will usually recognize this and may refuse to perform the surgery in your best interests.  Just remember that there are those surgeons with little experience that are trying to build a name for themselves and their clinics and might ill-advise the surgery.

One of the more common side effects of hair restoration surgery is known as “shock loss” which is usually temporary.  However, if the donor hair follicles that were transplanted to the balding area were unhealthy, chances are this shock loss will be more noticeable and the surgery will not be that successful.  Typically, there are 50 to 100 hairs that fall out daily, even after the surgery is performed.  When unhealthy donor hair is used, exaggerated bald areas may be common.

Here are some things to consider regarding hair restoration surgery and why these procedures are much more successful today than in past decades:

Remember that the first hair restoration surgeries were performed back in the late 1800’s and were simply barbaric as well as highly unsuccessful.  Fortunately, we have benefited from technology in recent decades and the advancements have created higher success rates with these surgeries.

Another thing that you want to keep in mind is that even though hair restoration procedures today are relatively simple, it is still surgery and carries some of the inherent risks that are common with any surgical procedure and minor complications could arise.  The main side effects are typically infection and pain but the surgeon who performed the hair restoration procedure will most likely prescribe an antibiotic and a painkiller to ward these complications off.
